Monster Cake

Monster Cake

Welcome to my first Super Geek Saturday post! I am excited to introduce this new way to combine the things that I love the most. Every Saturday, I am going to cook or bake something that is inspired by the things that I geek out over (i.e. books, movies, games).

The inspiration for this week comes from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I did not grow up in a video game-playing family. I had heard of Zelda but never had the pleasure of playing any of the games until college when my dearest roommate decided that I needed to play. I have been obsessed ever since that day. When I cannot play any Zelda games, I watch other people play them on YouTube. Cooking is an essential part of Breath of the Wild. I will probably take inspiration from this game in the future as well. Now, for the Monster Cake:

In the game, the recipe goes as follows: Tabantha wheat, cane sugar, goat butter, and monster extract. Link gathers his ingredients, throws them in the pot, waits for them to dance around a little bit, then POOF! A cake is made. Unfortunately, the real thing takes a little more effort and a few more ingredients. Here is my take.

Recipe:

  • 2 stick butter- room temperature
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 3/4 cup cocoa
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 squares bittersweet baking chocolate
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup + 2 TBSP milk
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 1 bag mini marshmallows
  • 5 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp. water
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • food coloring

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350F. Grease and flour two large round cake pans.

2. In a mixing bowl, add 1 stick of butter, brown sugar, and white sugar. Mix until well-combined.

3. In another bowl, add eggs, oil, and 1 cup of mild.

4. In a separate bowl, add the flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon and salt.

5. With your mixer on a slow speed, alternate adding the egg mixture and dry ingredients to the bowl with the butter/ sugar mixture.

6. Boil 1 cup of water. Add the baking chocolate. Stir until the chocolate is melted, then add to the cake batter. Mix everything until well-combined.

7. Pour the cake batter into the cake pans until each pan is 3/4 of the way full. Place into the oven and bake for 30- 40 minutes.

8. While the cakes are baking, make your fondant horns. Add 2 TBSP of water and the bag of marshmallows into a microwaveable bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds at a time until the marshmallows are well-combined.

9. Add 3 cups of powdered sugar and knead the fondant until it becomes malleable. (If your fondant is too sticky, make sure the room is cool and try adding a little bit of corn starch). Add some food coloring to the fondant until it becomes your desired shade of purple. Roll the fondant until it is flat. You will need something to shape your horns. I used wire from pipe cleaners because I was not planning on eating the horns. Wrap the fondant around the wires until your horns reach your desired size. Set them out to dry until they become firm.

10. For the frosting, mix 2 cups of powdered sugar, 1 stick of butter, 2 TBSP milk, and vanilla together. Scoop some of the frosting into a smaller bowl and add food coloring to make it purple. With the remaining frosting, you can either use food coloring or cocoa to make it brown.

11. To assemble: place one cake on top of a tray. Spread the purple frosting on top of the cake. Layer your other cake on top of the purple frosting. Swirl the brown frosting in a heaping pile on the top layer. Lastly, add the horns. Enjoy.
